Many people understand that certain habits, like eating too many sugary or acidic foods, might harm their mouths by contributing to the formation of cavities or gum disease. But would you be surprised to learn that your television viewing habits might also impact your dental condition?

For example, recent studies have revealed a correlation between binge-watching shows or movies an decreased oral health. If you spend a lot of time streaming on-demand videos, continue reading to learn more about how your habit impacts your grin!

What is Binge-Watching?

Those who don’t subscribe to video streaming services might not understand what ‘binge-watching’ refers to. Generally, it’s understood to be the practice of watching multiple episodes, or potentially an entire season or more, of a television series or set of movies in a single, sustained session. Sometimes referred to as “marathon viewing”, this practice became popular with the rise of online streaming services.

One 2018 study revealed that approximately 60% of American adults who used these programs also indulge in this pastime, though sources report that in 2025, 77% binge-watched monthly with an estimated 10% doing so daily. On average, 5.5 episodes are viewed over a 4.1-hour session.

How Does Binge-Watching Impact Oral Health?

You’re not alone if you’re curious how your video viewing habits might affect your dental health. In August 2020, BMC Public Healthpublished the results of a study performed by researchers from Arizona State University. Scientists discovered that the heaviest screen time watchers averaged about 17.5 hours of streaming videos per day and reported the least wholesome diets and poorest outcomes, compared to those who were moderate or light screen users.

It was concluded that binge-watching often resulted in unhealthy dietary decisions. For example, instead of cooking a wholesome meal, viewers are more likely to order takeout, pickup fast food, or fill up on sugary or salty snacks, like candy and popcorn. Unfortunately, these options are known to contribute to dental concerns, like tooth decay, periodontal problems, or other issues.

How Can I Prevent Dental Concerns While Binge-Watching?

If you’re concerned that you might be eating too many sugary, salty, or processed foods as a result of binge-watching, there are thankfully several ways you can help safeguard your smile. For instance, if you don’t already have a twice-daily dental hygiene routine, now’s the perfect time to implement one. Brushing and flossing twice daily removes plaque and bacteria to help you resist cavities and gum disease.

You can also fill up on more wholesome snacks that support your oral health. For example, snacking on cheese cubes that contain calcium can help you build strong teeth and bones, and many citrus fruits, like oranges, are high in vitamin C to support your connective tissues and can satisfy your sweet tooth!

Making conscientious dietary decisions can potentially help you protect your teeth regardless of how many TV shows you watch!
